North Canyon OF Hernandez Named MVP of U16 Tournament
SCOTTSDALE - The U16 AZ Angels White team, led by Tournament MVP outfielder Gerard Hernandez of North Canyon, finished second in the Prospect Wire West Coast Finals over the Memorial Day Weekend at Talking Stick Resort. It was the first amateur event held on the fields at the new spring training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.
The AZ Angels White team, one of five Angel squads to participate, finished with a record of 4-2 in the four-day tournament, which also included a full-scale professional evaluation prior to each teams first game.
The Arizona Valleydogs defeated AZ Angels White in the final, using a three-run fourth inning to rally from an early 1-0 deficit. Kobie Foppe had two of the Angels’ five hits in the game. Hernandez, Turner Lace and Micha Izquiredo had the others.
Hernandez finished with a .529 AVG, 1 HR, drove in six runs and tied for the tournament best with nine hits. Lace hit .500 and had nine hits on the weekend.
Foppe, who had eight hits in the tournament, pitched well in defeat, going the distance and allowing seven hits and striking out one. He threw just 75 pitches in the outing.
Other teams to participate includedd Halos Red, Halos White, AZ Angels Blue and AZ Angels Red.
